Wildlife enthusiasts enjoy visiting countries that have interesting wildlife experiences to offer. The Global Wildlife Travel Index for 2019 has ranked Finland as the best country in the world for wildlife travel. The index ranked every country based on its wildlife travel offerings. Several parameters were analysed including wildlife biodiversity, the prevalence of national parks, conservation efforts and protected natural areas.
This year, the index had more detailed insights focusing on environmental sustainability. This factor has become increasingly important for the eco-conscious traveller. The official website reads, “As the world becomes increasingly eco-conscious, we have placed a particular focus on examining factors around environmental sustainability, environmental prosperity and conservation in this year’s report.”
The index also focuses on environmental sustainability
The index is compiled by UK-based agency, True Luxury Travel. It has been expanded to include more detailed insights this year, including an increased focus around environmental sustainability, which is ever important to the increasingly eco-conscious traveller. “These results come as Finland has continued to see a rapid increase in tourism levels over the last year,” the index said.
Finland has high levels of environmental sustainability
Finland was voted the best wildlife travel destination because of a host of reasons. These include high levels of environmental sustainability, its unique and varied diversity of species, beautiful natural landscapes and conservation efforts. The country has also seen an increase in the number of visitors in the past year. It has nearly 39 national parks and forest areas that cover 73.1% of its land.
While analysing environmental sustainability, the index checked the risk posed to groups of species across every country. The Red List index was used to assess the extinction risk of different species based on various genuine threats. While Finland came in first, Sweden ranked second in the overall list. Other countries in the top 10 list for the best wildlife travel are Brazil, Canada, the US, Norway, Spain, Germany, Poland and Slovenia.
