New Airport Complex opens at Allahabad after Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on Sunday, December 16, 2018. The terminal and other infrastructure are said to have been created by the Airports Authority of India [AAI] in a record time of 11 months.
The project was taken up by the AAI as a challenge to augment the airport complex in time for the Kumbh Mela. Three additional aircraft parking bays have been built alongside the new terminal at the Bamrauli Airport at a cost of 164 crores.
Speaking to Times of India earlier, AAI Chairman Guru Prasad Mohapatra had stated,
“The time remaining was very less, just over 11 months. We decided to take this project as a challenge. It was not just building a new civil airport terminal but other infrastructure was also required to be added like more aircraft parking bays. That project is now complete and will be inaugurated on Sunday.”
The new terminal at Bamrauli Airport can handle up to 300 passengers an hour. Allahabad aka Prayagraj will have more commercial flights flying its way just ahead of the Ardh Kumbh Mela scheduled to begin in Mid-January, 2019.
The Airport Authority of India has awarded linking of 13 routes to Prayagraj. Under the Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik – II [UDAN -II] scheme the flight charges are capped at INR 2500 per hour.
