A new collaborative project between the Van Gogh Museum and apparel manufacturer Vans lets visitors take home sneakers and clothes inspired by some of the gallery’s most famous paintings.
The new line of apparel, bags, and shoes, is inspired by famous works of Van Gogh, such as the iconic painting of sunflowers. These selected works will now appear on the clothing, along with special tags that outline the historical facts behind the artwork. Vans worked with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam to “select various works by Van Gogh that speak to the creative ethos of Vans’ design, as well as personal moments from the artist family history”.
The museum is home to the largest collection of paintings by Van Gogh. The Dutch painter died in 1890 at the age of 37, unsuccessful in art and suffering from mental illness. However, his popularity increased after his death, and today, Vincent Van Gogh is considered one of the most influential artists.
Van Gogh Museum and Vans release new limited edition shoes
Vans’ new line has five different shoes depicting various pieces by Van Gogh, as well as a letter to his brother Theo. They feature some of his most recognisable works, such as the paintings of sunflowers, and display his use of brushstrokes.
There are also backpacks, t-shirts, hats and hoodies featuring the sunflowers, as well as a painting of a skull, and that of apple blossoms. This extensive Vans collection celebrates the troubles artist, and lets visitors take home a piece of the museum.
The items have proved to be extremely popular and the Van Gogh Museum Shop’s website shows that they have been sold out. However, new stock will be available from August 21. You can find out more at the official website.
