Wander around the old quater
Luxembourg’s old quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site worthy of the name. This historic old town is filled with amazing sights and is perched on sheer cliffs. It was once surrounded by ancient and impregnable fortifications, but these were destroyed in 1883. Today they have been replaced with tree lined cobbled streets and lush green parks. It’s a great place to wander around, exploring the charming old houses, narrow alleyways, and the scenic bridges across the river. You can also get panoramic views of this area from the Walls of the Corniche or the Passerelle Viaduc.
Explore the Casemates du Bock
The Bock Casemates are located beneath the former castle on Boc cliff and form a 21-kilometer network of underground passages hewn from solid rock. They were initially carved by the Spanish between 1737 and 1746 and are capable of sheltering thousands of people, horses, workshops, kitchens, and slaughterhouses. Indeed, they houses over 35,000 locals and thousands of soldiers during both the World Wars. Today, these atmospheric passages and thier rock stairways can be explored on foot, an are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
See the palaces and cathedrals
Like so manu other fascinating European cities, Luxembourg is also full of sumptuous palaces and churches. The most well known are the 16th century Palais Grand-Ducal, the original residence of the Grand Duke and the royal family and the Notre Dame Cathedral. Built by the Jesuits in the 17th century, this imposing building is embellished with luxurious details, including 19th century stained glass windows and many modern sculptures. It also houses the graves of the royal family. Also, don’t miss St Michael’s Church, located near the Gate of the Grund.

While there may be many things to do in Luxembourg City itself, there are also lots of things to explore around it. The small size of Luxembourg makes it easy to visit the many delightful towns and villages around it. Many have their own picturesque landscapes, aged fortresses, and stunning castles. There are quite a few interesting museums to visit in Luxemourg city. One of the best is the National Museum of History and Art, located in the historic Fish Market area of the old town centre. It has exhibits on everthing from art objects, archeological finds, furniture, tools, coins, armour, weapons, photographs, and documents dealing with the history of the country. The Luxembourg City History Museum, housed in 17th century houses, also explores the development of the city through special interactive exhibits. Also, check out the collections of art at the Contemporary Art Gallery, and the Museum of Modern Art built on the walls of the former Fort Thungen in the Parc Dräi Eechelen.
Relax at the Parc Merveilleux
Just outside Luxembourg city, in the town of Bettembourg, is the Parc Merveilleux. This amusement park attracts thousands each year, and is filled with exciting activities for all ages. There is a game enclosure, playgrounds, a mini-train running around the park, pony rides, arcades, mini-golf, restaurants, and regular outdoor concerts. However, if amusement parks aren’t your thing, you can visit the Philharmonic Luxembourg ot the contemporary Kirchberg district of the city.
