A beautiful country, Kenya is one of the most popular safari destinations in East Africa. One of the most geographically diverse countries in the world, tourism to Kenya has taken a hit due to terrorist attacks in recent years. Nonetheless, the country has lots to offer, so here the reasons you have to visit Kenya:

One of the top reasons to visit Kenya is the spectacular sight of the annual wildebeest migration. Up to a quarter of a million wildebeest migrate between Kenya and its southern neighbour, Tanzania, in search of water and greener pastures.

Kenya is full of serene and beautiful beaches with stunning white sand. They are the perfect place to watch the sunset or to take long evening walks. Mombasa, Malindi, Diani and Lamu are among the top beach destinations and are also known for their exciting water sports.

Like so many other destinations in East Africa, Kenya is the perfect opportunity to see the African “big five”. Elephants, lions, rhinos, leopards, and buffalos can be found at the many national parks in the country, along with other animals like zebras, gazelles, antelopes, and giraffes. You can also visit conservancies, such as the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (for elephants) and Ol Pejeta (for the northern white rhino).

There are lots of picturesque landscapes across this beautiful country that you can explore. From the soaring Aberdare Range with its many waterfalls to the Ngare Ndare forest, you can camp, hike, or just drive through various diverse areas. Be sure not to miss the Rift Valley and its stunning views, the Menengai Crater, and the famous Mount Kenya.

Kenya also has many large and wonderful lakes, with the largest being Lake Victoria (shared by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania). You can also visit Lake Turkana, Lake Nakuru and Baringo. These lakes are diverse ecosystems, home to many species, most famously flamingoes, who feed on the algae in the water.

Kenya has six world heritage sites, and among these are some wonderful and fascinating historical destinations, such as  Lamu Old Town, Fort Jesus, and the Gedi Ruins. You can also visit one of the many museums that explore the country’s rich history and culture.
