A National Historical Site, Plaza Cuartel is a restored ruin of an old garrison where, in the evening of December 14, 1944 Japanese soldiers burned around 150 American prisoners of war in a tunnel found beneath the park's portals, which now stands as a grim reminder of World War II atrocities. Interesting museum pieces are a historical typewriter and stenography machine, which Mendoza claimed was used by Gen. Douglas McArthur in Manila; old vehicles used during WWII; rusting guns and ammunition; uniforms of American soldiers, miniature war planes and ships; and old paper denominations used during the war. On the wall are the names of 1,000 guerrillas who belonged to the Special Battalion and fought in the city and province during the Japanese occupation.
