The journey from north to south, from Tangier to the desert, offers a gradual variety of scenery in every way. From the more European north, the blue of Chaouen to the imperial cities of Fez and Meknes. The passage through the Atlas Mountains (snow in winter) and the contrast with the oases and the desert and the Berber culture.
From Tangier we will travel early to Chaouen (approximately two and a half hours). The blue pearl of Morocco is our first stop of the day for a stroll through its indigo streets.

The spectacular Roman ruins of Volubilis can be visited in the afternoon at one stop before reaching Fez.

We will climb to the top of the hill where there is a historical military tower, to enjoy panoramic views of the city of the minarets. Then we will go to a nearby ceramic cooperative to see the artisan wonders that take place there.

From Fez we will cross the Atlas Mountains. The Azrou cedar forest where we will make a small stop on our way from Fez to the desert, is home to barbary macaques that live in freedom, although they are used to tourists who make this journey.

The city of apples that we will cross is going to be another of our intermediate stops on today's 7-hour drive.

We will stop to admire the overflowing greenery of the Ziz Valley, before reaching the desert.

We will pass through the town of Khamlia, whose inhabitants come from the Sha ethnic group of Central Africa. It is typical to listen to the Gnawa music with which they liven up meals.

Near Erfoud, there are some fossil quarries. We will go to see them and if desired to a fossil store. Then free time for desert activities such as quad biking or a camel ride to the dunes or a desert camp.

We undo the way back north, to Meknes, the most unknown of the four imperial cities of Morocco that we will visit briefly tomorrow.

The huge door that leads into the medina is the most representative element of Meknes. Opposite the square reminiscent of that of Marrakech where you can walk and see the stalls.

Recently remodeled, it is a beautiful mausoleum honoring the sultan who made Meknes the capital of the empire.

If there is time, we will also visit the Meknes granaries and then take the motorway back to Rabat and Tangier.
