In the past, De Waag was the center of trade. There has been a weigh house in Leeuwarden since 1483, but the current weigh house building was constructed around 1595. De Waag was in use until 1880, after which weighing took place in the Beurs- en waaggebouw (Stock Exchange and Weighing Building) at Beursplein.
