On this tour we will visit the Hokusai Museum where many of the painter’s work is displayed. Katsushika Hokusai is one of the most famous Japanese artist of ukiyo-e during the Edo period (1603–1868), He (1760–1849) is the author of a world-famous work: “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” (1831 ). Hokusai called himself “the drawing madman”. We will also visit Takai Kozan Museum. Kozan is who invited Hokusai to Obuse. You can do Sake Tasting in friendly owner’s brewery, and after that you will have set meal lunch in the Japanese stylish restaurant.
We will walk through famous street called ‘Chestnut Lane’ in old town as well as hidden path and private garden to explore more about Obuse.
Finally, we will visit Ganshoin temple to see Phoenix Glaring in All Directions on the ceiling.

Your guide will meet you at Obuse station Entrance & Exit. It is quite small station and only one both Entrance and Exit, so your guide can easilly find you.

A short walk away down the narrow Chestnut Alley is the rear entrance of the Takai Kozan Memorial Museum. This was the former residence of Takai Kozan, the rich merchant who invited Hokusai to Obuse as his patron and student. The museum exhibits many of Kozan's paintings as well as some of his calligraphy works. The building itself is well known for its hidden rooms and secret passages.

Visit Hokusai-kan to see collection of Hokusai's greatest works. Hokusai spent several of the final years of his life in Obuse before he died at the age of 88. A vast collection of paintings and works from Hokusai are on display at the museum. His best known work is the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji which includes the international recognized print The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

Ganshoin Temple features a ceiling painting of a phoenix by famed ukiyo-e artist Hokusai made when he was 89 years old. It’s best viewed by laying flat on the tatami mats and looking up.
