The first part of the Keizersgracht (between Brouwersgracht and (approximately) the current Leidsegracht) was dug in the summer of 1615 on the initiative of mayor Frans Hendricksz. Oetgens, city carpenter Hendrick Jacobsz Staets and city surveyor Lucas Jansz Sinck. The Keizersgracht, named after Emperor Maximilian I of the Holy Roman Empire,[1] is the widest canal in the center of Amsterdam, namely one hundred Amsterdam feet, i.e. 28.31 meters. A remarkable detail is that the Keizersgracht was dug later than the Prinsengracht (which was dug in 1614), while the Keizersgracht is the second canal of the three main canals.

The Homomonument is a memorial on the Westermarkt, located between the Westerkerk and the Keizersgracht in the city center of Amsterdam. The Westerkerk was built between 1620 and 1631 in Renaissance style according to designs by master builder Hendrick de Keyser (1565-1621). He is buried in the Zuiderkerk. The Westerkerk was completed under the leadership of his son Pieter de Keyser (1595-1676) and put into use on June 8, 1631. The church has a length of 58 meters and a width of 29 meters. The high central nave is flanked by the two lower side aisles. The three-aisled basilica has a rectangular plan with two transepts of equal dimensions.
