Senjogahara in Oku-Nikko is known as one of the best birding spots in Japan and is popular among Japanese birdwatchers. On this birdwatching tour, you will spend 3–4 hours walking slowly from Akanuma to Yudaki in search of wild birds. The trail is well maintained and easy to walk on, with few ups and downs, so even those unfamiliar with trekking can enjoy it. Along the trails, you can spot the beautiful-looking and vocal Narcissus Flycatcher, Blue-and-White Flycatcher, and Siberian Blue Robin. You may also see the dynamic display flight of Latham's snipe. If you are lucky, you may even spot the Japanese woodpecker, a species endemic to Japan.
After a refreshing lunch on the plateau, visit the World Heritage-listed Nikko Toshogu Shrine and Rinno-ji Temple. The opulent splendor of Toshogu and the dignified air of Rinno-ji Sanbutsudo are a good contrast, but both are good examples of Japanese culture.
The tour finishes at 3 p.m., so there is plenty of time for those coming on a day trip from Tokyo.
