Overview
This atmospheric and mystical town is the cultural and historical heart of Zanzibar. This is a half a day trip where you can visit a historical street constructed from coral stone during the 19th and 20th century.
It was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. Stone Town is a very lively place where you’ll find a combination of Arabic, African, Indian and European cultures living happily together.
As you walk through the labyrinth of streets too narrow for cars to pass, you can see mosques, churches and temples side to side.
While you wonder around the city, your guide will take you on a historical and cultural journey through the old slave market, the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, Sultan’s Palace and the Darajani market place. Also, it will include a lunch in a restaurant or in a local house, as agreed before.

Old Slave Market/Anglican Cathedral
The Anglican Cathedral of Christ Church was built in Stone Town (the old part of Zanzibar city) in the place where the biggest slave market of Eastern Africa operated. Its altar was placed exactly where the slaves for sale were whipped. On the floor, among the benches, there are black cobblestones as a remembrance of the dungeons used for slaves in the basement. Outside the Cathedral, there is a stone monument showing four people enchained by their necks as a way of reproducing the way in which slaves were offered to buyers.
Near the Church, there is the Exhibition of the Slave Market of Eastern Africa, an exhibition center that displays pictures, photographs, and historical information

The Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe)
“Ngome Kongwe” as it is known in the local language. Stone Town is a city of prominent historical and artistic importance in East Africa given its mixture of Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements underlying the local Swahili culture
The Old Fort is one of the oldest buildings in Stone Town and tells the story of Zanzibar in a nutshell. It was originally built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and later re-built by the Omani Arabs in the 18th century after expelling the Portuguese in 1699. During the 19th century, it was used as a garrison and prison, and as a terminal of the Zanzibar railways from 1905 to 1928. A new guardhouse was added in 1947 and it later served as a ladies' club. It became a cultural center in the 1990s after an amphitheater was added. Nowadays it hosts festivals such as Sauti za Busara and the Zanzibar International Film Festival
