The history of salt mining in Berchtesgaden dates back to the 12th century when an important salt deposit was discovered in the Bavarian Alps. Salt extraction began around 1193 near Schellenberg and shortly after at Gollenbach in Berchtesgaden. In 1517, Prince Provost Gregor Rainer founded the Berchtesgaden salt mine, marking the official start of mining operations. Over the centuries, the technology in the mine evolved, introducing new methods to enhance efficiency and safety. Notably, in 1816, the brine pipeline from Berchtesgaden to Bad Reichenhall was constructed, showcasing innovative engineering with water column lifting machines. The mine opened to visitors in 1816 for selected individuals and to the general public in 1880. Today, the Berchtesgaden salt mine remains an active salt mining site and a significant historical attraction, reflecting the long tradition of salt mining in Germany
