An tranquil introduction to the picturesque, quartzite rock formations of the MacDonnell Ranges. A transient waterhole often lies between the gap, but in its' absence there is access to some Arrernte rock art; remnants of Indigenous life in the Centre, pre-European settlement. Taking our time here, we can learn a little about Arrernte life on the land and the formation of these impressive Ranges. (20 minutes travel time from Alice Springs to Emily Gap)

Jessie Gap boasts a unique rock wall painted by Arrernte men in this sacred place of the Caterpillar Dreaming. The Gaps' impressive towering cliffs showcase the remaining bones of the gigantic mountain range formed during the Alice Springs Orogeny. (20 minutes travel time from Emily Gap to Jessie Gap)

Here we can enjoy a leisurely stroll as we circumnavigate this unique rock formation, watching it's shape transform as we move around its' base. This towering limestone formation remains as a connection to the timeless heritage of the Arrernte men, who have called this sacred site home for millennia. Here the diverse flora houses a variety of bird and reptile life, and the air is typically filled with bird song and the sound of the wind in the mallee trees and spinifex grass. On this 2km hike, the towering quartzite cliffs of Trephina Gorge stand tall below a sanctuary of diverse life above. Native birds fill the air with their melodies, while plant diversity on the plateau carpets the landscape, each species a testament to resilience. The sandy riverbed below offers an alternative, shorter stroll as it winds its' way through this oasis, in parts resembling the ocean floor that it once used to be. Ancient rock art speaks of the Dreamtime and the transformation of the caterpillars. Relax here a while and tap into the harmony of Earth's ancient rhythms.
