Originally a hunting lodge built by Louis XIII, it was extensively renovated and expanded by his son, Louis XIV, who relocated his court and government there in 1682. Over time, successive monarchs further enriched the palace until the French Revolution. Presently, the palace encompasses 2,300 rooms spread across an area of 63,154 square meters.
