Overview

Ten days in Tasmania enables us to explore more of Tasmania's wild places. We discover our famous national parks such as Cradle Mountain and Freycinet, but we also get to explore amazing natural landscapes like the Tarkine in North West Tasmania that are off the beaten track.

This tour finds a great balance between traveling around the state and exploring on foot with some easy-to-moderate walking options. This tour is motel-based only and includes many meals and great activities like the Gordon River Cruise and Port Arthur Historic Site.

A visit to Bonorong wildlife sanctuary to see Tasmanian devils and other wildlife is also a highlight of this tour. Russell Falls

Departing Hobart/nipaluna, we quickly begin to venture into the rugged Western Wilds. Our first stop in the rainforests of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area is to see the beautiful Russell Falls in Mount Field National Park.

As we continue west and climb into the alpine region, we’ll stop at Australia’s deepest freshwater lake, Lake St Clair.

Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park

Scenes of mountains and buttongrass plains abound as we travel through the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park and stop to see the tannin-coloured waters of the Franklin River and take a short walk into the lovely Nelson Falls.

Queenstown

As we near the historic mining town, Queenstown, take in the impressive views of the Iron Blow Lookout, Horsetail Falls and Mt Lyell. We’ll enjoy a group dinner and settle in for the night.

GORDON RIVER CRUISE > TULLAH

Departing from the harbourside village of Strahan, today we’ll cruise the Gordon River. This fantastic river cruise includes a guided boardwalk through the UNESCO World Heritage rainforest as well as a guided tour of the harshest penal settlement in Australia at Sarah Island. You’ll cruise through the treacherous Hells Gates which is a narrow passageway into Macquarie Harbour and enjoy lunch aboard the ship featuring Tasmanian produce. See the workings of a huon pine sawmill to further appreciate the history of this picturesque town.

Strahan

The Gordon River Cruise begins and ends in Strahan which is a picturesce harbourside village. Strahan is a gateway into the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. It sits within Macquarie Harbour and you'll be able to experience the lovely waterfront area before we depart to Tullah.

Stanley is the north west coast's most picturesque town and best known for the volcanic plug jutting out to sea called The Nut. We will enjoy lunch in town and explore some of its quaint areas before continuing on our journey.

Breathe the world's freshest air at the Edge of the World, located in the township of Arthur River on the west coast of Tasmania. Walk through the temperate rainforests of the Tarkine/takayna to the geological wonder of Trowutta Arch.

The Tarkine Drive

Today offers a deeper experience of the Tarkine. This ancient rainforest is the second largest cool temperate rainforest in the world. It is a wilderness area that holds ancient relics of animals and plants as well as palawa indigenous heritage sites from thousands of years ago. One of the stops today is at Sumac Lookout which offers breathtaking forest views across the Arthur River where we'll keep our eyes peeled for Wedge-tailed eagles.

As we return to the north west coast, we will stop by Table Cape and see the lighthouse while enjoying sweeping views across Bass Strait. At 180m above sea-level, Table Cape is a remnant volcano.
