ixty kilometers from Bukhara are the ruins of the Paykend settlement, occupying an area of about twenty hectares. Some sources say that Paykend, unlike other cities of Central Asia, did not have a ruler. It was a kind of "merchant republic" where the silk trade flourished. But after the conquest of Central Asia by the Arabs, Paykent became in the 8th century one of the largest centers of the Bukhara oasis for the fight against nomads.
