The Cardo

The Western Cardo became the most important thoroughfare of Byzantine Jerusalem. During the Roman period, this part of the city remained partially not inhabited and probably occupied by the X Legio Fretensis.

Christian Quarter

This church is one of the two most holy sites in the Christian world. According to Christian tradition, this was the location that Jesus was held captive, crucified, and anointed before his burial in the Golgotha and subsequent resurrection. The Greek, Roman, Catholic, Armenian, Coptic, Syriac, and Ethiopian Orthodox churches share ownership of parts of this church.

Temple Mount

From the southernmost bridge entering the Temple Mount, the vast walls stretching out towards the Antonia fortress far off to the north can be admired. The grand, extensive surrounding portico of the Temple Mount delimited the sacred precinct, where only members of the Jewish nation were allowed to enter, and only on religious business. Herod had the area extensively refurbished, elaborating the existing structures.
