In the 11th century, the Brescians decided to spruce up the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore with a brand-new cathedral. It took nearly a hundred years, but the result was nothing short of epic: a circular plan inspired by the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, with a giant dome and a bell tower soaring skyward.
