Overview

Ishikawa, especially its capital city of Kanazawa, is known for its love of traditional Japanese sweets and snacks. One of these, Tsujiura, is a particularly iconic part of local life — despite being only seen at one time of year. These triangular treats are eaten as part of celebrating the new year in Kanazawa. Inside of each is a small message written on a piece of paper: the local custom is to eat three Tsujiura, and figure out what the three messages inside, taken together, have to tell you about your year to come.
Guests can experience a beloved part of the local culture that is largely unknown even within Japan, and go beyond simply trying Tsujira by actually making their own, including choosing or writing their own messages to put inside.

What To Expect

Experience a part of Kanazawa culture that is simultaneously a beloved and iconic local tradition, yet almost entirely unknown in most parts of Japan. Guests get an up-close view of experts making Tsujiura, a new year’s fortune-telling treat made of chewy mochi, at the famous sweets shop Nagaike Saikado — and then try making their own! Choose from the shop’s collection of fortunes to put inside, or write entirely new ones. Tsujiura are a chewy confection traditionally saved for new year celebrations, but this workshop also includes a rare opportunity to try eating them while they’re still warm and fresh.
The experience begins with a tour of Nagaike Saikado’s workshop, where sweets-making experts are hard at work producing countless Tsujiura fortune-telling sweets in preparation for the new year. Watch the impressive — perhaps even surprising — way that they’re made.
Following this demonstration, guests are taught how to make Tsujiura, and make their own with their choice of Nagaike Saikado’s traditional fortune messages inside, or their own original messages.
