Gran Mezquita de Tanger

The Great Mosque of Tangier was built in the 19th century and is located in the old medina of Tangier. Before it was a mosque, the site hosted important religious buildings from different civilizations, starting with a 5th-century Roman church. When Muslims conquered Tangier in the 8th century, they turned the church into a mosque. It stayed a mosque until the late 15th century when Tangier was under Portuguese and English rule and the mosque became a church. In 1684, when Moulay Ismail took back the city for the Alawi dynasty, the church was turned back into a mosque. In 1815, Sultan Sulayman rebuilt the mosque because it was in bad shape, resulting in the current building we see today.
