Dix Hill Asylum was the first and largest "lunatic asylum" in North Carolina history. What started as the dream of Dorothea Dix, a safe refuge for the widely abused mentally ill population of North Carolina, quickly developed into one of the most notorious asylums in American history. Join us on this historian-guided tour of the grounds of Dix Hill asylum, while diving into the most disturbing stories from the asylum, and learning about the early history and evolution of mental health treatment in America.
We meet near the front of the All Faiths Chapel at the heart of the former Dorothea Dix Hospital, at the raised concrete platform near a small parking lot.
