Overview
Discover black walnuts, New York's native nut! This experience cannot be duplicated. Black Squirrel Farms, the first licensed black walnut processor in New York State, offers an outdoor, interactive hands-on guided tour that explores the history and future of the Eastern black walnut and demonstrates how we get nuts from the tree to the table. The opportunity to crack, maple-glaze and taste black walnuts yourself is included. The guided tour segment takes 45 minutes and kicks off 15 minutes after the scheduled start time (11:15am for the 11:00 am experience, 1:45pm for the 1:30pm experience) to allow time to sign in and preview the self-guided activities available around our site. After the guided tour concludes, guests are welcome to stay and roast marshmallows, learn to guess the age of a tree, create a black walnut craft, play lawn games, look at found things under a microscope and more!

Our driveway entrance is marked by a sign that says "Black Squirrel Farms". Turn right after entering the driveway and find an available downhill parking spot. Check in at the farm stand. Your tour guide will meet you under the big walnut tree by the yard sign that says "Tour Starts Here".

What To Expect
Seneca Lake
We are located conveniently along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail on the west side of Seneca Lake at 590 NY 14, Penn Yan, NY 14527. Black Squirrel Farms is the first licensed black walnut processing facility in New York State. On our guided tour, you will hear the story of a native walnut tree that doesn’t grow in the woods and how this unusual species fits into the regional landscape. Come consider the black walnut tree from a whole new perspective, learn about the history of black walnut processing, see our own approach, and crack and taste them yourself! Experience how we are making this unique North American renewable resource more accessible, useful, and appreciated.
