During your leisure time in San Gimignano, make sure to explore the historic and artistic heart of the borgo. The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, also known as the Duomo di San Gimignano, is a Roman Catholic basilica nestled in the heart of San Gimignano, Tuscany. Within its walls lie exquisite Renaissance frescoes by illustrious artists like Domenico Ghirlandaio, Benozzo Gozzoli, and others, hailed by UNESCO as "works of outstanding beauty." Dating back to the 10th century, the church's significance grew during the 12th century due to its location on the pilgrimage route to Rome, the Via Francigena. Consecrated in 1148 in the presence of Pope Eugenius III, it stands as a testament to the town's historical importance. Over the centuries, it underwent expansions and enrichments, with notable additions by Giuliano da Maiano in the 15th century. Despite damage during World War II, its restoration in 1951 revealed remnants of its earlier structure.

Siena Cathedral ranks among Italy's finest examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Legend has it that this grand Cathedral replaced an earlier 9th-century church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In 1259, a payment to "Magistro Nichole de Opere Sancte Marie" likely marks the first mention of Nicola Pisano, famed for crafting the remarkable pulpit now housed in the north transept. His son, Giovanni PIsano, continued the legacy, overseeing the Cathedral's facade and adorning it with sculptures of prophets, sibyls, and philosophers. Opt for the Full Tour and enjoy skip-the-line access to the Cathedral, ensuring an immediate and immersive experience in its divine ambiance, complemented by a multilingual audio guide. Stepping into the Duomo is a breathtaking journey, with its lovely, naturally lit atmosphere and magnificent architecture. Explore at your own pace and uncover step-by-step the masterpieces of Michelangelo, Donatello, Pinturicchio, and a young Raphael.
