What To Expect
Fortress Hohensalzburg
After 2.5 hours driving time we reach Salzburg. The landmark towers of the fortress over the roofs of the city of Mozart will be seen from far. The fortress is up to 250 meters long and 150 meters wide. This makes it the largest surviving fortification in Central Europe. The castle complex is located on the Festungsberg in the center of Salzburg. You can easily reach the Hohensalzburg Fortress with the fortress railway. Several viewing terraces provide an unforgettable view of the city and countryside.
The oldest part of the castle has more than 900 years of history. The first part was completed around 1077. In the centuries that followed, the various owners of the fortress - the Archbishops of Salzburg - continued to build on the castle. The money for this came from salt mining, the "white gold" had made the Salzburg rulers rich men.
We visit the fortress together with the fortress railway, an inclined elevator.
