On this tour, you will become apart of the natural ecosystem by learning it's history, soil, plants, and wildlife. Your guide has been a student of natural resources in San Luis Obispo for half of her life. She has taught plant identification courses at Cal Poly and lead botanical surveys in Golden Gate, Rocky Mountain, and Yosemite National Parks. Her passion for ecosystems is compelling and she will teach you natural history that you can take with you to your next hike no matter where you land.
50% of all proceeds go to a grant-writing company to support non-profit community farms and ecosystem restoration.
Take Los Osos Valley Road through Los Osos and past the residential areas. Enter Montano de Oro State Park and drive to the end of the road. Find a spot at the parking lot and meet up at the trailhead on the Southeast corner of the parking lot.
09:30 AM
This activity ends back at the meeting point.
We will hike up through chapparal communities with manzanita and ceanothus and see views of the ocean bluffs to the North. If visitors would like to learn plants, I will point out new plants as we encounter them. The loop trail summits over a view of the Coon Creek river Canyon. We will take the switchbacks down to the Coon Creek canyon and explore the riparian (creek) species. In some seasons there are thimbleberry and strawberry here! The Bishop pine forest on the south side is new, it burned about 20 years ago. We will take the creek trail back to the trailhead with the option to explore more of the park.
