What To Expect
Davelis Cave

The mysteries of Greece’s Davelis Cave have been perplexing locals for years. Located on Mount Penteli, the cave has been enjoying a notorious reputation since the 1800s when reports of paranormal activity first began. The cave marks the opening of a series of tunnels that run through the mountain and lead to a pool of water in the centre. These natural formations are also linked to the mischievous god Pan. Archaeologists excavated various mountain ceramics depicting Pan and his nymphs, suggesting a long-standing connection between the site and the god. We will walk around to show you the marble quarries and how the ancient Greeks removed the precious marble to build Athens. There is also a double Byzantine church built directly into the rock.

Davelis Cave

At least 20 thousand tons of Pentelian marble were used for the construction of the Parthenon. In order to transport the marble, the ancient craftsmen built "Lithagogias Street". The road started from the quarry in the cave of Davelis in Penteli and ended at the south side of the Acropolis. The journey took about 6 hours. It is estimated that there were about 20 carriages that covered the route ten times a day. We will walk the ancient Lithagogia Route for a brief distance where we will explain to you how the ancient Greeks managed to extract and transfer the marble to acropolis.
