It is the remains of an explosive crater formed when Mount Hiyori erupted. A sulfur spring of about 130 degrees erupts from the bottom of the pond. It is the source of hot spring water for major hot spring hotels in Noboribetsu. There is an observation deck here, where you can see the steaming lake in front of you. You can also walk to the lake to experience it up close. The bear ranch located near the entrance of the Showa Shinzan Ropeway is home to more than 100 purebred Hokkaido brown bears. Brown bears are the largest wild mammals in Hokkaido.
