During the medieval era, Počitelj stood as the hub of administration and governance for Dubrava župa (county), marking the strategic western frontier—a testament to its paramount importance. Legend has it that Bosnia's King Stjepan Tvrtko I commissioned the construction of the fortified town and its surrounding settlements back in 1383.
