Make the most of your visit to the National Gallery in London by exploring it in a company of an art historian. This small-group tour will take you through the imposing structure of the building, which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year. You will be able to learn about the history of the gallery's origins, explore tits massive art collection and hear some insights into the individual works, curatorial decisions and acquisition policies.
The National Gallery is the unique place to learn the story of European art, masterpiece by masterpiece. Limit of 10 people ensures a more personal experience of the gallery and convenient tour length leaves plenty of time for individual exploration. You’ll emerge from the experience with new ways of talking and thinking about art.
Your guide is a qualified art historian (MA in History of art and Photography) with years of experience of guiding in this gallery behind her belt. Don't miss this opportunity, it is informative yet fun.
We will be meeting on a bench just past the security inside the Getty's entrance. If you arrive through a different entrance, the meeting place is located next to the Muriel's Kitchen cafe inside the National Gallery.
This activity ends back at the meeting point.
Celebrate 150 Years of Impressionism at the National Gallery. This guided tour offers you an opportunity to have a closer look at paintings by the ground-breaking artists who were included into the very first Impressionist exhibition, such as Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, and Paul Cézanne. Considered deeply controversial at the time, their work marked a dramatic shift away from traditional styles. But of course they didn’t just invent new methods of depicting light, form and subject matter without looking anew at the art of the past.
We will talk about how the work by J.M.W. Turner, Rembrandt, Caravaggio and other Old Masters influenced the artists of the future, the importance of the 17th-century Dutch art. We will stop to admire some jewels of the gallery’s collection: Holbein, Michelangelo, Canaletto and Moroni.
And what about women artists, you may ask? There are only 4 pieces currently on display and we will dive into the history of female painters. All ages are welcome, no previous knowledge of art history is required. Ask questions and get excited, this will be an art ride like no other.
