The Picnic Concert is one of the main attractions of PMF, held at the Sapporo Art Park Outdoor Stage – the exact location where Leonard Bernstein gave his famous opening speech and conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in 1990. Bernstein’s vision for PMF was to contribute to world peace through music education, and we strive to manifest that vision even now. Spend a summer day amidst rustling trees, birdsong, and a classic blue Sapporo sky, all while enjoying music of unity, created by world-class artists and young musicians from countries around the world – the PMF Orchestra!
The Sapporo Art Park was opened in 1986 with the aim of creating a new forum for arts and culture in northern Japan. With this aim ever in mind, it continued to grow and evolve across many years, and is now an established symbol not only of the importance of arts and culture to the city, but of Sapporo itself, with a unique harmony of cultural creation and lush natural environment.

What To Expect
The PMF 2024 Picnic Concert Experience provides visitors of all ages the experience of the ever popular Picnic Concert without any worry about transportation or parking difficulties, and all at a surprising cost value. The bus traverses both the heart of the city and the mountainous region to the south, providing views of both. The concert takes place at the Sapporo Art Park, in its lush natural surroundings, at the Leonard Bernstein Memorial Stage, where Bernstein gave his famous speech at the first PMF in 1990. A variety of food & drink (and beer!) is available for purchase and can be enjoyed while listening to an orchestra made up of 85 young musicians from 25 countries & regions, selected via highly competitive auditions, led by a faculty of principal players from the major US orchestras, creating a unique and powerful unity of sound. In addition to the concert, experience the Sapporo Art Museum, the Sapporo Sculpture Garden, and more, all within the Art Park!
