Ste Pétronille offers a breathtaking view of the St. Lawrence River, site of the most important naval battles of the British Conquest and, in the distance, the promontory of Quebec that Charles Dickens described as the "Gibraltar of America" in his story " American Notes" of 1842. The "New England" architecture of Ste-Pétronille dates from the 19th century, when Anglo-Canadian merchants fled the city to live safe from the cholera which struck the port of Quebec and Canada in the 1830s.
