The Hacienda de Corralejo is a historic estate located in the municipality of Penjamo, in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. The hacienda was established in the late 18th century, during the colonial period, and was primarily used for the production of agave and the distillation of tequila. The hacienda has a long and storied history, and was at one time owned by the famous revolutionary hero, Miguel Hidalgo, who used it as a base for his insurgent army during the Mexican War of Independence. The hacienda was later acquired by the Sauza family, who transformed it into one of the largest and most successful tequila distilleries in Mexico. The Zona Arqueologica Plazuelas is an ancient Mesoamerican archaeological site located in Pénjamo, Guanajuato. The Plazuelas site dates back to the Pre-Columbian period, and was inhabited by several different indigenous groups, including the Chupicuaro, the Olmec-Xicalanca, and the Tarascan people. The site is known for its large public plaza, which features several impressive structures, including pyramids, temples, and palaces, as well as a series of ball courts and an intricate system of canals and aqueducts. The site was first discovered in the 1960s, and has since been the subject of numerous archaeological investigations and restoration efforts. Today, visitors can explore the site and its impressive structures, including the Pyramid of the Sun and the Plaza of the Columns, which feature intricate stone carvings and other decorative elements. The Zona Arqueologica Plazuelas was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.
