Rani-ki-Vav, situated along the Saraswati River, began as a tribute to a monarch in the 11th century AD. Stepwells are unique underground water management systems in the Indian subcontinent, originating from around the 3rd millennium BC. They progressed from basic pits in sandy terrain to intricate multi-storey structures, representing the pinnacle of stepwell and Maru-Gurjara architectural styles. Rani-ki-Vav exemplifies this mastery, designed as an inverted temple emphasizing water's sanctity, with seven levels of intricately carved stairs featuring over 500 principal sculptures and numerous minor ones depicting religious, mythological, and secular themes, often drawn from literature. The fourth level descends to a 9.5m x 9.4m tank, 23m deep, while the well's shaft, 10m in diameter and 30m deep, lies at the property's westernmost point. This site showcases the evolution of stepwells into artistic marvels blending functionality with aesthetic grandeur.

The origin of practice of Sun worship in India is evidently found in the Vedic scriptures of Hindu religion signifying the millennia old tradition. Modhera is sometimes called Mundera, the original settlement of the Modha Brahmans and is fabled to have been given them as a Krishnarpana on occasion of marriage of Ram and Sita. They acted as the gurus to the Modha Vaniyas. The Jain acharya, Hemchandra, was of the Modha Parentage. The outstanding Sun Temple at Modhera is located on the left bank of the river Pushpavati, a tributary of river Rupan in Becharaji Taluka of Mehsana District of Gujarat.
