FITO Museum

The Museum of Traditional Vietnamese Medicine, also known as Fito Museum, is home to numerous unique and well-preserved exhibits of herbal medicine. With English-speaking staff and well-organized exhibition rooms, Fito Museum solidifies itself as one of the best museums in Ho Chi Minh City. At first glance, the most captivating aspect of the Museum of Traditional Vietnamese Medicine is its architectural style. Inspired by ancient buildings, the museum is mainly built from wood, giving it a distinctive atmosphere from the metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City. A visit to Fito Museum is an educational experience, as you can learn about and marvel at the achievements of Vietnam’s herbal medicine displayed in 18 exhibition rooms. Not only is the museum a time capsule of traditional medicine, but it also has a shrine to commemorate the founding fathers of the practice: Tue Tinh and Le Huu Trac. Above all, what makes so impressive is how well it has stood the test of time.

The lacquer itself is actually the resin of a tree which is mixed with coloured pigments and solvents and applied layer after layer to the object's surface, producing a shiny and durable finish. Eggshell and mother of pearl may be applied to the surface before the lacquer is applied, in which the finished product is sanded down to reveal the decoration beneath. The high quality of resin from Vietnamese lacquer trees, notably those of Phu Tho, was a crucial factor in the rapid development of this art form during the feudal period. Decorated lacquer statues, panels, boxes and trays (1428-1527), may still be seen at many temples and pagodas. In subsequent centuries the use of lacquerware was extended to larger items such as wooden chairs and tables. Since that time lacquerware has continued to develop into one of the mainstays of the Vietnamese handicraft industry, both at home and abroad. Today's most popular items include vases, jewel cases, desk sets, trays and vertical blinds.

Ben Nghe Street Food Market

The food market in District 1 has over 30 stalls selling a wide variety of dishes and drinks, with a some stalls operated by expats in the city. I was overwhelmed by the wide variety of culinary delights available, with familiar local dishes such as phở, bánh xèo, cơm tấm, as well as exotic international cuisine from India, Greek and Mexico. All the stalls proudly display their finest and most mouth-watering dishes, from tasty looking Indian samosa, to grilled pork ribs that glisten under the light, and pan-fried beef that bursts into a tower of flames when a skilled chef sets it alight. It may take you a while to decided what to have for dinner. Walking and browsing the stalls is almost as fun as eating. I say almost, because the food is what we are all here for. With around 3,500 visitors everyday, Bến Nghé Street Food Market is adored by many local and foreign diners looking for a cool place to hang out with friends and families.
