Tulum is one of the most important archaeological sites in the state of Quintana Roo, since it is the only site that is facing the Caribbean Sea. In ancient times it had the name of Zamá which means sunrise, the current name, Tulum, means “enclosure or wall”. For the ancient Mayans, this city was the main center of maritime and land trade in the area. Currently captivates everyone who visits, this Mayan city was built on a cliff from where the turquoise tones of the Caribbean Sea can be appreciated in all its splendor. It has more than 60 restored temples, El Castillo is the main building of the archaeological zone of Tulum, being the most photographed site in the Riviera Maya due to its peculiar location on the cliff. The Mayan city is surrounded by walls, each one symbolizes one of the elements: earth, water, air and fire. The reef that is in front of the coast, forms the fourth wall and was practically inaccessible.
