An ancient Roman gate probably dating back to the 1st century A.D., opened in the ancient walls of the Roman Tergeste, built by Augustus in 33 B.C.

This stands on the top of the hill of the same name, which was already the acropolis of the Roman city of Tergeste and probably the site of a sacred area. The present building, with five naves, is the result of the unification, in the early 14th century, of two separate religious complexes.
