Tuscany in summer can reach very high temperatures, but there are several hidden places away from mass tourism that can provide refreshment even in the hottest months.
The quintessential place in the deep south of the Val d'Orcia is Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano that reaches 1700 meters (5500 feet) above sea level and offers the largest beech forest in Europe, from where you can see much of southern Tuscany, Umbria, and northern Lazio.
The shuttle from Montepulciano crosses the beautiful landscapes of the Val d'Orcia to climb to the summit of Monte Amiata, where a short uphill walk will take us to the Cross, and then allow free time to enjoy the cool mountain climate and perhaps savor a nice mountain lunch at the restaurant.

A very comfortable fully licensed 8-seater Mercedes van will take you through the magnificent Val d’Orcia to the foothills of Monte Amiata, about a 1-hour journey, from where an easy guided walk will begin up to the summit of Monte Amiata, offering a 360° view of central Italy. The very short guided walk will be followed by free time to enjoy the cool temperatures of Amiata and savor some typical mountain dishes at the summit, before returning to the base.
