Guests experience the chance to make their own wooden bowls, for a glimpse into the world of Fumiko Shoji, the professional woodworking artisan who leads the session. Use wood from decades-old trees, slowly dried for use, and shape it into a graceful bowl using tools like Kanna hand planes and a pedal-powered lathe. It is up to each guest to decide how, exactly, their finished bowl should look, including questions like how thick to leave the walls of the bowl, or whether to give it a foot or not.
The artisan who leads these sessions can also provide demonstrations of her work, and can share her wisdom and knowledge from life in the mountains. Guests can learn about seasonal flowers, medicinal plants, and other parts of the natural environment in Japan.
