Without the bustle and hustle of mass tourism, discover the hidden gem of Lier to get immersed in the rich history and culture of Belgium. The tranquil beauty of Lier is composed of the untouched natural landscapes of scenic forests and rivers, the serene atmosphere veiling the whole city, and historic landmarks that look like something walk right out of a fairy-tale story, including the riverside 16th-century house of Het Spui located in a beautiful forest setting, the 14th-century St Gummarus Church boasting all the beauty of Brabantine Gothic style, the engineering jewel of Zimmer Clock, and last but not least the whole vintage world inside the UNESCO-recognized Lier beguinage.
The fairytale book of Lier opens with the rusticated house Het Spui (or Groot Spui), located by itself in a relaxing and picturesque riverside setting on the edge of the city. Built on a historic discharge sluice that controls the water in the city, the well-maintained 16th-century house is the only remainder of the city’s second ramparts, which overlook beautiful green landscapes of the forest on the other bank.
