Apartheid Museum
Nelson Mandela, born Rolihlahla Mandela (1918-2013), was a pivotal figure in South African history. Here's a quick rundown:
Early Life & Activism: Born into the Thembu royal family, Mandela studied law and became involved in anti-colonial and African nationalist movements. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in the 1940s to fight against apartheid, a system of racial segregation that favored whites.
Imprisonment: When the National Party solidified apartheid in 1948, Mandela and the ANC became more militant. Mandela co-founded the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe. He was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage. For nearly three decades, he became a symbol of resistance while imprisoned on Robben Island.
