The Dominican Republic has something for every traveler: Sunshine, pristine beaches, lush forests and historical cities. It’s the perfect destination, whether you’re looking to relax, participate in outdoor adventures or explore urban landscapes. This tourist destination makes it easy for the traveler to book their holidays, with ample resort locations, restaurant establishments and businesses geared toward making visitors happy.

The best times to visit are from February to April, the driest time of year, but no matter when you go, you’ll need to pack your prescription sunglasses. These are the must-see places for travelers who have their sights set on the Dominican Republic.

Flying High in Cabarete

If adventure sports are your thing, there is no better destination than Cabarete. The miles of sandy beaches are the primary attraction. It’s the world’s top spot for kite surfing. These ocean waters also attract scuba divers and kayakers. Beyond the beach, nearby caves beckon those who like to go spelunking and exploring. Though there are no resorts here, you’ll have no trouble finding a place to lay your head and fill your belly.

Splashing Around at the El Limon Waterfall

This spectacular waterfall plummets 170 feet from the top of the cliff to the pool below. You can only reach this destination via a trail, but that’s just part of the fun. Most choose to go by horseback, but hardier types can opt to hike the steep terrain. After ambling on your steed or slugging it out on foot through the forest, you get to jump into the cool waters as a reward. Make sure you take along a picnic lunch.

Paddling on Bayahibe Beach

Bayahibe is a former fishing-village-turned-resort town. It’s a popular location for visitors who love scuba diving and stand-up paddleboarding. The beach is located a mile from the resort town. While you’re there, make sure you catch the boat to Saona, where you’ll find amazing beaches within a national park setting. Don’t forget your prescription sunglasses, you’ll need them to protect your eyes from the sun’s glare off sand and water.

Santo Domingo

The capital of the Dominican Republic is the oldest city in the Americas. It’s chock full of historical architecture from the Middle Ages. You can spend hours wandering the streets of the historic district. Make sure you take in the beautiful Cathedral Santa Maria la Menor, the monastery and the castle. The Calle El Conde is where you’ll find most of the urban conveniences, with plenty of shops and restaurants.

Lounging Seaside in Las Galeras

For those who prefer to chill on quiet, sandy beaches, Las Galeras is the place for you. This remote location is off-the-beaten-path, so it doesn’t attract the throngs of tourists many of the Dominican Republic’s other beach destinations do. Here, you’ll find miles of beaches lined with palm trees and facing pristine, crystal blue waters.
