This is the 21st century we live in. And I personally believe that it is very difficult to find anything in its pure form. Take for instance our skincare or hair care products, there are so many chemicals present in them these days. We end up harming ourselves. So why not go for organic products instead of using chemicals. And if you think organic shampoos and organic skin care products are also not pure, you might have to change your opinion after this article.

Let’s start with organic shampoos!

Why Do We Need Shampoos In The First Place?

Early in the 1930s, the first synthetic detergent shampoo was introduced. It wasn’t perfect but later in the 1960s, the detergent technology was improved. And its the same technology that we use today. The only difference is that what we use today is gentler.

So the reason why we need to use shampoo or lather is that the human scalp is waterproof!

Yes, you heard it right. Dance freely in the rain now…

Science time:

Glands that are underneath our skin manufacture sebum which is oily and coats the hair follicle. During this process, sebum makes the hair follicle greasy. But since sebum makes the hair scalp waterproof, normal water makes it hard to cleanse the scalp.

ENTER SHAMPOO!!

The shampoo contains two faced chemical compounds, called Surfactants. Now the half of each surfactant is water-soluble and the other half is not. When the hair meets water that is interacted with surfactants, it washes away the sebum, non-water soluble matter, dirt and sweat that makes your hair greasy. And that is why kids, you have lather in your shampoos!

How Many Times Should You Shampoo?

Ideally, you should wash your hair 2 times a week. Unless you have hair like Enchantress, then you might want to wash it daily or hourly. I mean, your wish!

Why Is Organic Shampoo Better Than The Chemical ones?

Natural shampoos contain natural plant extracts that help the hair and scalp in many forms without using the chemicals. Organic shampoos infuse natural oils, minerals and herbal extracts into the hair follicles to maintain moisture. They also make the hair more healthy and repair the damaged hair. And because they contain all natural ingredients, they are suitable for all skin types and are also non-allergic.

What Should You Look For In An Organic Shampoo?

  • You should always look for ingredients like Coconut oil, Aloe Vera that help in stimulating the hair growth. They also keep the scalp hydrated and moisturised.
  • Organic Shea butter, beta glucan and tea tree oil; these ingredients help in retaining natural shine and hair colour, soothing irritated cells and maintaining the health of the scalp by providing antiseptic properties.

Chemicals to Avoid:

Chemicals are harsh to your skin and hair. Avoid the products that have the following chemicals in them:

  • First and foremost, ALCOHOL. Alcohol is cheap and very easily available so companies put it in everything. It can extract the moisture from your hair and make your hair dry and frizzy.
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfates reduces the surface tension of water that results in the loosening of sebum from your hair.

Sebum isn’t that bad after all. Sebum plays an important role in protecting our scalp from foreign particles like bacteria that can cause infections and acne.

  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Mureth Sulfate
  • Olefin Sulfonate

Which Organic Shampoos To Use?

Enough education about organic shampoos. Let’s talk about what shampoos to use. The best part about organic shampoos is that since they are sulfate free shampoos, they work well for all types of hair. Here are a few organic shampoos that you will love after the first use.

The Body Shop Rainforest Shine Shampoo

The Body Shop Rainforest Hair Care range was launched in 2010. Since then their shampoos have been delivering great results and the customers seem to be very happy. Like most of their products, this one product too has raised expectations and is doing really well. I can say that because I have used this product and can’t suggest you a better one. It is free of chemicals like silicones and parabens. Also, it contains conditioning oils that keep your hair moisturised.

It is gel based and is highly recommended for people with dry hair.

Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo

Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo has argon oil which is not less than magic for your hair. In my previous articles about hair care, I have mentioned the importance of argan oil. The best part about the shampoo is that it restores moisture and protects the hair from damage caused by UV rays or hair styling. The shampoo is sulfate free but still lathers up nicely. It helps in making your hair manageable, frizz-free, soft and shiny.

Truly Organic

Truly Organic Super Plant Shampoo promises to never strip hair of natural oils and guess what? It keeps its promise. Super plant shampoo is sulfate free, toxin-free and paraben free. It’s a unique blend of plant-based ingredients which helps in detoxification of the scalp. The product claims that the essential oils, powerful plant enzymes and positive microorganisms will leave your hair thicker and softer. If this is how it works, then I don’t see a reason for not buying it.
